A column that has been coasting is suddenly asked for its rated pull-down with a warm room around it.

Marginal components survive steady work and fail under episodic work. A condenser fan that has slowed, a door seal that has hardened, an evaporator fan with a worn bearing — none of them shows up on a quiet Tuesday in September, and all of them show up on the Friday you have forty people in the house. Which is why, in this neighbourhood specifically, the sensible time to have anything looked at is several weeks before you need it rather than the morning of.

Ice is the component that gets pushed hardest

A dedicated ice machine is the only appliance in these houses that can be asked for its full rated daily production three days running, and it is the one most often found short when it is. The failure is rarely dramatic. Output tapers, the bin stops keeping up, and because nobody weighs ice the change is noticed only when it matters.

The diagnosis follows the water path in order, because the symptoms overlap and the order is what separates them. Supply and shut-off first, then the fill valve and the volume delivered per cycle, then the freeze plate and the length of the harvest, then the bin thermostat or level sensing, and the drain last. A machine that fills short, a machine that freezes slowly and a machine that cannot release a slab all present as low production, and only the sequence tells you which one you have.

The other thing worth knowing is that a machine used episodically is not lightly used. Long idle periods with a wet interior are their own load, which is why a machine that runs hard for one week a season often needs more attention than one that runs steadily all year.

Salt still gets here

A mile and a half back from the dune is not shelter. It is attenuation. The oxide bloom that closes up a fin pack in two years on the oceanfront takes longer here, but it takes the same route and produces the same symptom: a cabinet that runs longer every summer without ever quite failing. Annual condenser attention is a reasonable baseline in Players Club, against twice a year on the beach side, and a house with an outdoor kitchen or a pool-deck unit should treat those exposed appliances by the beachside schedule regardless of where the house sits.
